INDEPENDENT JOURNALISM

Hello, McColl Magazine readers:

A new year well underway, so are a series of new webinars for 2024.

We have webinars, free of charge to attend, scheduled in the new year:

The Webinars began as follows in 2024 -

January 4, 2024, at 1pm EST – New Slope Roofs: This webinar describes the science of roof venting, when venting is effective, when it is not and what alternatives are available.

January 9, 2024, at 1pm EST – Windows: Windows can cause a great amount of heat loss during the winter. In northern climates sealing out the cold is a primary concern. Unfortunately, windows can also be a source of technical concerns. Precisely, how well a window is installed certainly provides another related concern. Fortunately issues with windows can often be avoided if special consideration is care is taken during the design and planning stages. The important details and considerations about windows along with how best to install them will be covered in this webinar.

January 11, 2024, at 1pm EST – Construction Materials: Wood frame construction has been a long-term option chosen for millions of houses across North America for decades. Wood is the structural material mainly used for all walls, floors and roofs used for platform framing. Wood framing and its various related wood-based products should not be taken for granted, the important details and considerations along with how best to install them will be covered in this webinar.

January 16, 2023, at 1pm EST – Vapour Barrier: This webinar described the science of vapour flow through building materials, the factors that affect vapour flow and alternatives to the poly vapour barrier.

BACKGROUND

Nov. 6, 2023 -- First Nations National Building Officers Association (FNNBOA) is looking at a tentative start date of mid-December to go ahead with the 2023-2024 webinar series.

"We are tentatively looking at a start date of mid-December with a maximum of six webinars this year," said the news release. "There will be a maximum of 6 webinars this year."

The planned webinars thus far include:

* Selection and installation of windows

* Selection and installation of doors

* Selection of Wood for construction

* Construction Bonds and Bid Bonds

The other two topics are pending.

Webinars have been well-received in the Indigenous nations across the country. Housing managers in the Indian Reservations across Canada have been approached with the purpose to create social capital by putting qualified personnel into housing positions on Indian Reservation property. There is housing expertise in all FNNBOA initiatives is there to fill the gaps between Indian Reservation housing and market housing across the country, and there are challenges to meet in housing in the Indian Reservation system for Indigenous Canadians.

It is an unspoken fact that Indian Reservation housing doesn't exist within the National Building Code. Complaints about housing in the Indian Reservation system are unanswered. Housing in mainstream Canada doesn't fall apart in less than a decade. Seven years is the life-span of a lot of the construction happening in housing on Indian Reservations, to this day.

If that's not appalling enough, the occurrence of 15 to 20 people living in a single family dwelling is as common as daylight in places you might find surprising.

FNNBOA is prepared to deliver the programs that develop housing skills inside on-reserve housing departments, you can register here

Future webinars will be produced to highlight community successes is with your help. Your presentation can be a minimum of 10-20 minutes, up to 60 minutes. If you are interested in presenting a webinar on your community successes (e.g., project management, shipping construction materials on roads) or challenges you’ve faced and how they were overcome (e.g., building on sandy soil),

FNNBOA has had very positive responses from past sessions, so now the organization is turning to you, the housing manager of Indigenous housing, on-reserve, urban developments, any position putting you at the doorstep of Indigenous homes.  respond in the following.

If you are interesting in sharing your experiences with other building professionals, contact FNNBOA at info@fnnboa.ca (mailto:info@fnnboa.ca) and they will follow up with you on next steps.
