Western Maritime Institute (WMI) state-of-the-art campus and training facilities are located in Ladysmith and Surrey, BC as well, available to offer group courses at communities all over Canada. WMI is widely accessible with industry-driven marine training and certification for seafarers.

Marine workers are in demand and rewarding careers get underway when you qualify. Marine work can be hazardous, which makes safety training integral in the skill development of maritime work employees. WMI is an accredited provider of training for fishing and commercial marine industries.

The operations in Ladysmith south of Nanaimo, B.C., include spacious classrooms for academic studies, firefighting and survival craft training simulators, as well as Transas Bridge Simulators, making it one of only two campuses in Western Canada to include this level of training.

“I recently finished MED STCW Survival Craft with Jerry Bowen as my Instructor. He had amazing knowledge of the course, with additional stories from his past experience," says Erik Finnhansen. "The school brought us out to the docks to experience a TEMPSC boat and to a pool for Inflatable life raft and exposure suit training. I highly recommend this course and teacher to those looking for such training.”  https://www.maritimeed.com/about-us/testimonials/

WMI Accreditation comes from Transport Canada Marine Security & Safety, regulatory authority for the Canadian marine industry. Transport Canada oversees licensing, certifications, safety and training, and WMI is a Transport Canada approved institute.

Another accreditation for WMI comes from Private Training Institutions Branch (PTIB), responsible for certifying over 51,000 students in private training institutions in B.C. each year. B.C. Ministry of Education regulates PTIB, and is responsible for: certifications, directory of institutions, (and formerly certified institutions), student protections and management of the Tuition Protection Fund.  http://www.privatetraininginstitutions.gov.bc.ca/

WMI's Education Quality Assurance (EQA) designation applies to public and private institutions in B.C. that meet or exceed quality assurance standards set by the Province of B.C. https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/education-training/post-secondary-education/institution-resources-administration/education-quality-assurance

B.C. is a beautiful world apart when it comes to tourism, which makes the hospitality industry a great career option in the province. WMI in Surrey provides courses leading to jobs in tourism. Furthermore, the Surrey campus offers business, bookkeeping and business administration courses with optional practicums for careers in office management.

When Covid-19 was in play in society, people needed to work at job readiness online. WMI provided MARINE ONLINE LEARNING courses. "Do not be dissuaded by distance. Your career goals are unique and the pursuit of such goals shouldn’t be on hold because of everyday life. Irrespective of your location, WMI is bringing the classroom to you." https://www.maritimeed.com/online-learning/

The development of skills for essential maritime ready employment takes place at WMI's Ladysmith Campus. They issue MARINE CERTIFICATES for Transport Canada accredited programs like Bridge Watch Rating, one example of excellent entry level training for those who have little or no marine experience but would like to work as deckhands. This program is a always recommended to sail as a certified Bridge Watch Rating on vessels of any size and with major employers, the Canadian Coast Guards, and BC Ferries for example.

The Bridge Watch Rating Program is Transport Canada approved, 12 weeks long and prepares entry level seafarers with knowledge of the functions related to the Bridge Watch, the Standards of Safe Working Procedures and understanding of the hazards associated with the marine environment and their vessel.

Successful completion makes you eligible for four months of sea service remission. This program is approved by the Private Training Institutions Branch of BC and eligible for student loans.

Once courses of such accreditation are completed student graduates submit certificates, Statement of Sea Service documentation of two months of sea time, and Steering Testimonial showing 10 hours of experience steering a vessel, to Transport Canada in order to sit a written examination conducted by a Transport Canada examiner.

That's the final step for you to receive the Transport Canada Bridge Watch Rating Certificate of Competency. The extensive WMI section on Marine Certificates is on middle of the top menu bar https://www.maritimeed.com/
